      Joe Ledger is still seriously traumatized by the events of Rage (2019), so traumatized that his already-splintered psyche has created something new, something Ledger thinks of as the Darkness. While still trying to function as a member of Rogue Team International, he's haunted by the deaths of his family, and increasingly he can think of only one thing: revenge. Maberry brings back the main villains from Rage, the maniacal Kuga and his lethal right-hand man, Rafael Santoro, and he gives Ledger a literal army of enemies standing between him and his revenge--cybernetic supersoldiers who are as close to invincible as anyone has ever been. Can Joe get to Kuga and Santoro before the Darkness consumes him? Maberry, who's won the Bram Stoker Award for horror writing an astonishing five times (not to mention several other nominations), takes a calculated risk here, both in crafting a story that is darker than your typical Ledger novel and in taking Joe to a place from which we wonder if he can fully return. The author has been taking a lot of creative risks lately--see 2018's Glimpse, for example--and it's exciting to see them paying off so spectacularly here.
