FOIL FLYER • An exciting new foil-assisted powercat, a collaboration between designer Scott Robson and renowned sailor Matt Mason, was recently completed by Allspec Marine in Nelson. Boating New Zealand joined the vessel for the last leg of its delivery voyage.

SOUTHERN SUMMER ROADIE PART 2 • In the second part of his story recounting a southern summer road trip, Tom Fraser picks up the journey at Lake Ohau, about 30 minutes from Twizel.

Caribbean switch • Best to switch discreetly and with dignity. There comes a time in an aging yachtie’s life when billowing sails, stiff breezes and flying spray aren’t quite as alluring as before. Blame it on creaking bones, fading strength, a dodgy ticker – whatever. Power launches become very appealing.

READY FOR TAKE-OFF • Jonathan Edgar of Auckland-based JP Crafts has been hand-crafting bespoke vessels at its facility in Wairau Valley for nearly a decade. Together with his father Phil Edgar and design guru Nicky Malcon, they head a team of designers, boatbuilders, project managers and other specialists to bring their clients’ visions to fruition.

RIDE THE FUTURE OF FISHING • On December 10, 2024, Sea-Doo held a media day for New Zealand journalists to introduce the 2025 Fish Pro range. Boating NZ’s Tim Porter enjoyed a day on the water trying them out with Sea-Doo ambassador Andrew Hill.

Tuna-trolling basics • This yellowfin tuna season is the best we’ve had in more than 20 years – let’s hope it’s a return to the ‘good old days’!

SLOW BOAT TO RACEHORSE RIVER • Our summer cruise was postponed by those gales. Then there was the truckload of mulch for the garden. And floor to ceiling bookshelves in the lounge. When we finally got away, we discovered a getaway haven that made it all worthwhile…
