Cigar Aficionado

May/June 2024
Magazine

Cigar Aficionado is a magazine for the man who enjoys life’s great pleasures: fine dining and entertaining, the finest wines and spirits, world travel and the arts. At the heart of every issue is the cigar: what to smoke, where to smoke, and how to enjoy a great smoke.

highlights • The cigars of Nicaragua dominated this tasting, delivering the top-scoring cigars in five of our six categories—along with the issue’s very highest scores, 95 points. And we seldom rate “A” sizes, as these incredibly long cigars can be more than nine inches. They’re a rarity in most humidors but can be marvelous smokes, as our testing showed.

“A”s • We rarely rate “A” sizes in CIGAR AFICIONADO and that’s because “A”s are quite rare, with a lot working against them. They can be up to 10 inches long, making the “A” a huge time commitment. They require extra-large, pristine wrapper leaves, which can be difficult to procure. And they’re also quite expensive. Despite all that, a few companies still produce these oversized smokes. The most impressive we found was the Tatuaje Reserva A Uno, made in Miami, which scored 94 points. We were also taken by the Fuente Fuente OpusX PerfecXion A (93 points), which gives the smoker a tour of Chateau de la Fuente, where all the tobacco was grown. Eiroa shows off its Corojo-seed, Honduran tobacco with the 50x10, a 92-point “A” that’s nearly a foot long.

churchills • While trade names for cigars can often be self-serving and hyperbolic, the San Cristobal Revelation Triumph is exactly that. At 93 points it was the highest-scoring cigar in this category. It’s made in Nicaragua by My...
