Cigar Aficionado

January/February 2025
Magazine

Cigar Aficionado is a magazine for the man who enjoys life’s great pleasures: fine dining and entertaining, the finest wines and spirits, world travel and the arts. At the heart of every issue is the cigar: what to smoke, where to smoke, and how to enjoy a great smoke.

highlights • Cuban cigars have taken no shortage of criticism lately due to their high prices, but this blind taste test shows that cigars made in Havana continue to impress. Four of our highest scores came from Cuba and the two highest (95 points, Classic on our 100-point scale) went to Cubans. One is extremely pricy, the other relatively more affordable.

churchills • The Cuban Romeo y Julieta Churchill scored 93 points and is widely considered a reference size in the world of Cuban cigars for a variety of reasons: It was popularized by and named after former U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill; it’s one of the few Churchill sizes that Cuba still produces; and it’s one of Havana’s most recognizable cigars overall. The Romeo Churchills we smoked for this tasting came in a tube; so did the Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente King T Rosado Sungrown, which also scored 93 points. When the King T debuted in the late summer of 2009, it was the first time that a Fuente cigar had been packaged in a tube. The original was made with a Connecticut shade wrapper, but the Sungrown version, which is made with a darker Ecuadoran cover leaf, is a more recent addition.

figurados • The Cohiba Pirámides Extra from Cuba was one of the highest-scoring cigars in the issue, impressing the panel with a blockbuster score of 95 points. It’s called Pirámides Extra because it’s a little longer and a little thicker than typical Cuban pirámides cigars. When it came to market in 2012, it retailed in the United Kingdom for £33.70. Now, 12 years later, the price has more than tripled. Three cigars scored 93 points: The Aging Room Quatrro Nicaragua Sonata Maestro, from Nicaragua; the Byron 1850 Selección Grand Bouquet, which is made in Costa Rica, yet has no Costa Rican tobacco; and the La Flor Dominicana Oro Chisel, produced in the Dominican Republic. The Oro Chisel comes in a golden tube and was created by Litto Gomez as an homage to his former occupation as a jeweler.

grandes • Grandes have really come a long way. This publication used to put them in the corona gorda category, but...
